What happens on moving day?

Let’s talk about the basics of what happens on moving day, what you need to do and a rough moving day timeline.

Moving day timeline

  • 7am: Get up and check you’ve got everything
  • 8am: Removal company collects boxes
  • 9am: Cleaner arrives to clean home
  • 11am: Leave old house and hand over keys (this can be earlier depending on distance to new home)
  • 30am: Removal company arrives at new home
  • 12am: Collect keys from estate agent
  • 30am: Welcome to your new home!

It’s worth noting that if you are in a chain and everyone is moving on the same day, the final person in the chain might not get the keys until 4/5pm. Ideally, it should be before 5.30pm as this is the last time a bank transfer of money can take place.

Completion and moving house

It’s usual that you complete your purchase on the same day as you move. This means that you transfer the remaining funds to the seller and you, officially, own your new house. Don’t worry, there’s not too much for you to do here.

Your solicitors should have guided you through what you need to do days before. You’re just waiting for the money to clear before you get your keys from the estate agent.

From experience, this can take time. If all goes well and there’s no property chain, it’ll usually take the full morning, so you should expect to get your keys at around midday.

Moving out and in on the same day

Unless you’re using storage or it’s your first home, it’s likely that you’ll move out of your old home and into your new one on the same day. If this is the case, speak to the removal company about timings. As mentioned, you’ll usually have the whole morning to empty your old house and move your stuff to your new home.

Just make sure everything is packed and ready to go. If you’re struggling to pack, Jorvik offers a packing service to help make everything a little easier.

There are probably a few items left that the removal company aren’t taking, so get up early and make sure your car is packed and ready to move. Do a last sweep of the house, checking cupboards, lofts, garages, sheds, kitchen cupboards – anywhere you think you might have left anything.

It’s also worth taking meter readings, taking a few photos of the house, and checking you have all the keys for the house – for every window, door, cupboard etc. Ideally, you’ll have organised a cleaner to come after you have left.

Getting into your new house

Once you’ve got the keys, congrats. Take a breath, wander around and enjoy the feeling of owning a new house.  Now that you’re in and all the paperwork is done, there are a few checks to do.

Moving day checklist

There are a lot of things to remember on moving day. Don’t worry, we’ve put them all together in a handy moving day checklist. You can download this checklist as a pdf.

Morning Preparation

  • Dress Appropriately: Wear practical clothing and sturdy shoes – it’s going to be a long day and you want to be comfy.
  • Final Walkthrough: Check each room, closets, and storage areas for any forgotten items.
  • Essentials Kit: Ensure your essentials box/bag (toiletries, medications, important documents, chargers, snacks, etc.) is easily accessible.
  • Children and Pets: Arrange for them to be looked after or have a plan to keep them safe and occupied.

Coordination and Supervision

  • Movers Arrival: Be ready when the movers arrive and show them what needs to be moved.
  • Inventory Check: Review the inventory list as items are loaded onto the truck.
  • Last-Minute Packing: Pack any last-minute items that you're still using (e.g., bedding, toiletries).
  • Utilities Check: Ensure all utilities are functioning (electricity, water, gas) for the final walkthrough and cleaning.

Cleaning and Security

  • Clean the House: Perform a final cleaning of the house after everything is loaded. This could include vacuuming, sweeping, and wiping down surfaces.
  • Lock Up: Close and lock all windows and doors once the house is empty.
  • Thermostat Adjustment: Set the thermostat to an appropriate temperature if required.
  • Key Handover: If necessary, arrange for the keys to be handed over to the new owner or estate agent.

At the New Home

  • Arrival Check: Ensure utilities are set up and working in your new home.
  • Direct Movers: Guide the movers to the correct rooms with your boxes and furniture.
  • Unpacking Priorities: Start with essentials like the kitchen, bathroom, and bedding.
  • Safety Check: Quickly check that all exits are accessible, and that smoke detectors and other safety devices are working.

Personal Care

  • Stay Hydrated and Fed: Have water bottles and easy meals/snacks available.
  • Take Breaks: Moving is physically and emotionally taxing, so take short breaks when needed.
  • Meet the Neighbours: If time permits, introduce yourself to your new neighbours and apologise if your moving has caused them any disruption.

End of Day

  • Final Inspection of Moving Truck: Ensure nothing is left behind in the moving truck.
  • Payment and Tips: Complete payment to the moving company and provide tips if you're satisfied with their service.
  • Relax: Once everything is in, take time to relax and enjoy your new home.

Moving day tips and hacks

There are a few things you can do before that make moving day easier. These moving day hacks can help reduce your stress and allow you to enjoy the day for what it is.

Moving day survival kit

Whether you prefer boxes, bags, or folders, it’s worth putting together a few kits before the day. The first is the moving day survival kit. This has all the essentials and should include:

  • Tools: You don’t need a full toolbox but a set of screwdrivers, torch, scissors, Swiss army knife, box cutters and some tape are always useful.
  • Chargers: Don’t let your phone die on you when you’re expecting a call from the estate agent.
  • First aid kit: Moving can sometimes lead to bumps and cuts, while the logistics and stress can cause headaches.
  • Cleaning kit: It’d be nice if the previous owner has cleaned your new home, but in case they haven’t take a few cloths, disinfectant spray, and bin bags.

Moving day essentials box

As well as your moving day survival kit, it’s worth having a separate essentials kit. This can include:

  • Medication: If any family members have special medication, keep this on you at all times.
  • Documents: All your key documents should be to hand, whether it’s passports, driving licences, contracts and legal documents related to the move, or simply a list of contact details.
  • Toilet paper: Yes, people forget this one but if you arrive at your new home, having been on the road all morning, you might need a trip to the toilet.
  • Entertainment: It might not feel essential but moving day can be a long day – often with long waits. So, an iPad, speaker or books can help pass the time – especially if you’ve got kids.
  • Toiletries: Stay fresh with some basic toiletries like soap, hand disinfectant, a few clothes and some wipes.

Moving day food

Depending on your moving day timeline, you could be without access to a kitchen for the whole day. So, it’s worth packing some food to keep your energy levels up.

  • Breakfast: Try and have a big breakfast before you leave or head out and treat yourself to a coffee and breakfast on route to your new home.
  • Snacks: Stock up on snacks for you and your family. High energy bars are great for keeping you going, while a bag of sweets will help keep kids happy while they wait. And plenty of water. Moving – especially on a hot summer day – can be hard work.
  • Lunch: Scope out places near your new home such as supermarkets and cafes so you can grab a substantial meal.
  • Hot drinks: A lot of moving can be done when you’re got a hot cuppa in hand. Keep some coffee, tea, milk, and sugar to hand at all times. You could even make a flask or two to make life easier.

Moving day cleaning

Cleaning is often overlooked, but it’s a key item for your moving day checklist. We always recommend cleaning both your old house and new house. You can hire specialist moving day cleaners or just chose your local cleaner for the job. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours but makes all the difference.

Moving day hacks

Everyone loves a good hack to make life easier. While not all these will be suitable, you might just find that one hack that transforms your moving in day.

  • Colour coding: A simple one to start – just add a colour to each box for each room (red for kitchen, pink living room etc) and when you arrive put matching coloured post it notes on the respective doors.
  • Name the labels: Use masking tape around each cable and then write on it what it’s for and where it goes.
  • Bag up screws: Collect all the screws from furniture, stick them in a little bag together and write on what it’s for.
  • Find the local skip: While you’ve probably cleared out and done a skip run already, once you’ve arrived you’ll probably find items you realise you don’t want. Don’t just shove them in your new house – get rid.
  • Check traffic: Don’t get caught in rush hour traffic. Do a dry run to your new home to check traffic levels, road sizes and parking options.
  • Keep key items to hand: Keep a kettle, microwave, and laptop in your car. Plug them in as soon as you arrive so you can drink, eat, and be entertained – essential if you’re moving with kids.
  • Use garages: If your new home has a garage, you could use it for a items like chairs and tables. This allows you to get a room sorted before you decide on the layout.
  • Dress well: On moving day, wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or torn.
  • Register address on delivery apps: Add your new address to delivery apps before so you can quickly order food to your new home. It’s practically a tradition to have a takeaway on the first night in a new home.
  • Book a food delivery: Plan a food delivery for the day after the move.
  • Take photos: when you arrive, take photos of everything including any damage, anything you didn’t spot on your viewings and the meters.

Best day to move house

There is no right or wrong day to move. According to some superstitions, the best day to move house is a Thursday. While many people think Friday is the best day to move as it then gives you a full weekend to unpack and get sorted. Many people also choose to move on a weekend due to work commitments.

Speak to your estate agents and lawyers if you’re in a chain as that will impact the day you can move.

Do you get a day off for moving house?

It’s worth booking a day off work to move house. While removal companies can do a lot of the moving for you, you’ll need to collect the keys and help supervise. Book the day off work as soon as you get your completion date. While most employees will be happy to give you the day off as part of your holiday allowance, they are not obliged to.

Moving on a rainy day

While it’d be nice if it was a cool summer day when you moved, there’s a good chance you’ll be moving on a rainy day. This is fine but worth planning for. Check the weather in advanced so you can prepare, especially if its persistent rain or a storm.

Get some plastic covers for items you don’t want to get wet like electrical goods and art works. If packed properly, most will items be waterproof enough.

Lay down some cardboard or other covering to protect carpets. If there’s no way to preventing wet and dirty boots on your carpets, book a carpet cleaner for the following day.

Try and organise it so that any removal company can get as close as possible to your door and that they don’t have to walk over mud or grass.
