How much does storage cost?

How much does storage cost

Storage can be a life saver when you’re moving home or downsizing and have a load of stuff you don’t know what to do with. You don’t want to get rid of it, but you also don’t want it cluttering up your new home. It’s also useful for seasonal businesses who need to securely store tools and other equipment for part of the year.

But working out storage costs can be tricky if you don’t have a guide. Thankfully, Jorvik Storage has plenty of experience in providing accurate quotes for the cost of storage in Yorkshire and the surrounding counties, so you can work out how much self-storage will cost you. Here’s our guide on all the various factors to consider when working out how much storage costs.

How much does storage cost monthly?

The first factor to consider when working out storage costs is how long you’re going to need it for. Storage costs are usually worked out on a monthly basis – though at Jorvik you can rent storage on a weekly basis from just £8 a week for our smallest units.

For monthly self-storage costs (we are working on four weeks of rental), you could be looking anything between £32 for a 10sq ft container to £140 for a 160 sq ft outdoor container.

If you’re looking for a long-term deal, you can often find discounts on monthly storage costs by booking a number of months in advance. With Jorvik, we offer a 10% discount when you book six months of our York storage up front and 20% for booking a full year in advance. This could equal a monthly storage cost saving of £30.

Vehicle storage cost

If you’re looking to store a vehicle, then it’s worth knowing the costs of certain container unit sizes. When storing a vehicle – whether it’s a motorbike, car, book or caravan – you’ll need outdoor storage units.

Caravan storage cost

With a caravan or motorhome, you are probably better off storing it in secure car parking rather than a storage unit. However, if you prefer containerised vehicle storage, this is an option. Usually, the largest container storage units are the size of a garage. At Jorvik, our largest are 160 sq ft – or 20ft long and 8ft high. Measure your caravan or motorhome to see if it fits into this size unit. These vehicle storage units start from £35 a week or £140 a month.

Car storage cost

As above, for cars you’re probably best off choosing a large outdoor storage unit. This would cost you around £140 a month. If it’s a small car, you might be able to fit it into a small outdoor container unit – these measure 10ft long by 7ft high. They cost £80 a month.

Remember, if you’re storing a car off the road for a long period, you can apply for a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). Given that the highest rate of car tax can reach £2745 per year, putting your car into storage can be the cheaper option if you aren't planning to use the vehicle any time soon.

Boat storage cost

Small boats, canoes and kayaks - often used to traverse York’s rivers - can be stored in small containers when not needed. For a small motorboat, you could probably choose the small container unit, which costs £80 a month. They are dry, secure and easy to access – should you need to tackle flood waters at short notice.

Furniture storage costs

Putting furniture in storage can be a cost effective way of keeping it clean and dry while you move house or redecorate. Our indoor furniture storage units are best for sofas, tables and chairs. These start from 20sq ft – or 5ft by 4ft. These would be perfect to store a small sofa or armchair. The cost of this furniture storage would be around £32 a month.

If you’ve got a number of pieces of furniture or whole living room suite, you might want to look at large storage units. A 50sq ft unit is the size of a transit van so could be used to store a number of furniture items from just £100 a month. Or if you’re in between moves and need to store beds as well, consider the 140 sq ft units – similar in size to a standard garage. These start from £220 a month.

Piano storage cost

Piano storage costs are simpler to calculate. With even the largest grand pianos measuring no more than 8ft wide, we are confident that you could store your piano in a large 160sq ft outdoor storage container. These start from £140 a month. We can also provide you with the correct storage materials to make sure your valuable piano still plays a tune when you get it out of storage.

Storage cost by house size

If you need to store everything between house moves, it’s possible to do so with our furniture storage options. You might need to hire a number of storage units, depending on the size of your property. In these cases, you can divide your items by room or whether you want to keep them in indoor storage or outdoor container units. The best approach is to list all the rooms in your home, the largest items in each room and then estimate number of boxes needed for the rest.

For example, you might have:

  • Bedroom 1: Bed, wardrobe, 5 boxes
  • Living room: Sofa, chair, TV and unit, 6 boxes

This will give you a rough idea of the storage space you need.

Storage Costs for a 3-Bedroom House in the UK

When you're planning a move or simply need extra space, storage solutions can be incredibly helpful. However, understanding the storage costs for a 3-bedroom house is crucial for budgeting and ensuring you choose the right option for your needs. Storage facilities offer flexibility, but prices can vary depending on several factors, such as the type of storage, location, and the amount of space required.

How Much Space Will You Need?

Typically, for a 3-bedroom house, you will require approximately 130 to 150 square feet of storage space. This is a general estimate and can vary based on how much furniture and belongings you have, as well as any additional storage requirements, such as a garage or garden shed. If your 3-bedroom house comes with a considerable amount of outdoor furniture, appliances, or bulky items, you might need more space than initially expected.

Factors That Affect Storage Costs

The storage costs for a 3-bedroom house can vary significantly depending on a few key factors:

  1. Type of Storage: Indoor storage, which provides climate control and added protection, typically costs more than outdoor storage units. Indoor storage is ideal for items that could be damaged by extreme temperatures or moisture. Outdoor storage is cheaper but may be less secure and lacks temperature regulation.
  2. Location: The cost of storage also depends on where you're located. Urban areas or regions with a high demand for storage space, such as London, tend to have higher prices than more rural or suburban areas.
  3. Duration: Many storage facilities offer discounts for long-term rentals, so if you're planning to store your belongings for several months or even years, you may be able to negotiate a lower rate.
  4. Accessibility: If you need regular access to your stored items, some facilities offer 24-hour access but may charge extra for this convenience.

Typical Storage Costs for a 3-Bedroom House

So, what can you expect to pay for storage costs for a 3-bed house? Based on the space requirement of 130-150 square feet, the typical cost for outdoor storage would be approximately £140 per month. If you opt for indoor storage, which is more secure and better suited for delicate or valuable items, you can expect to pay around £220 per month.

These figures are estimates and may fluctuate depending on the region, type of storage, and any additional services the facility may offer. Always check with local providers for the most accurate pricing.

Storage Costs for a 3-Bedroom House UK

For those specifically interested in storage costs for a 3-bedroom house UK, it’s important to note that prices can vary greatly across the country. In cities like London or Manchester, you may find that storage facilities charge significantly more than those in smaller towns. On average, indoor storage in these urban areas could range from £250 to £300 per month, depending on the size and location.

If you're looking for more cost-effective options, consider facilities in nearby suburban or rural areas. While this may require travelling further to access your belongings, it can result in substantial savings.

Making the Most of Your Storage Space

To minimise your storage costs for a 3-bedroom house, it's essential to make the most of the space you rent. Disassembling large furniture, stacking boxes efficiently, and using vertical space can all help you fit more into a smaller unit, potentially reducing the amount of space (and money) you’ll need. Additionally, getting rid of unnecessary items before storing your belongings can significantly reduce the overall cost.

In conclusion, when calculating storage costs for a 3-bedroom house UK, it's essential to consider the type of storage, the location, and how long you’ll need the unit. By evaluating these factors, you can make an informed decision and find the best storage solution for your needs at a price that fits your budget.

Storage Costs for a 4-Bedroom House in the UK

When it comes to storage for a 4-bedroom house, the size and amount of your belongings will influence the space you need and the cost. On average, you’ll require about 200 square feet of storage for a 4-bedroom home.

For indoor storage, which offers protection from the elements and added security, costs typically range around £330 per month. This is ideal for valuable items or those sensitive to temperature changes. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, outdoor storage is often available at a lower rate, averaging £200 per month, though it may not offer the same level of security or protection.

It’s important to note that storage for a 4-bedroom house in larger cities like London may come with higher prices, often exceeding £350 per month for indoor storage. In more rural areas, costs tend to be lower. Before committing, ensure you assess your storage needs carefully to avoid renting more space than necessary. Efficient packing and careful organisation can help reduce the storage costs for a 4-bedroom house significantly.

Maximise Your Storage Space to Save Costs

One common mistake clients make when renting our York storage spaces is not fully utilising the vertical height of the unit. Many people only think about the floor space and overlook the volume of the unit as a whole. By organising your items carefully and stacking them efficiently, you can store significantly more within the same size unit, potentially allowing you to downsize the storage space required and reduce monthly costs.

Here are some tips to make the most of your storage unit:

  1. Pack Vertically: Use sturdy boxes and stack them high, placing heavier items at the bottom and lighter, more fragile items on top. This way, you maximise the use of vertical space without compromising the safety of your belongings.
  2. Disassemble Large Items: Take apart furniture like tables, bed frames, and wardrobes to save space. Store the pieces vertically to minimise the floor space they occupy.
  3. Leave a Path: When organising your items in the unit, leave a central path. This allows you to access your belongings easily without having to move everything around, which can save time and effort, especially if you need to retrieve something from the back.
  4. Use Shelving: If the unit is tall enough, consider using freestanding shelves. These can help you store more efficiently by allowing you to place items at different heights. These can be taken directly from your home and set up in the storage unit, helping you repurpose your furniture for where it can be best utilised.

By using these strategies, you can make sure you’re not paying for more storage space than you need while still being able to access your belongings whenever required. This small attention to detail can help you get the cheapest storage in York, resulting in significant savings, especially for long-term storage.
